Alstom Power Portugal Delivers the Goods for Uhde’s Project in Finland

“Dortmund based Contrans Logistik Seamlessly Arranges the Transportation from Setúbal to Porvoo for Uhde GmbH”

Setúbal, Portugal, October 14, 2005 - Portuguese based Alstom Power delivered on five modules of convection banks on order for Fortum Oil Oy’s project in Porvoo, Finland, for work undertaken by Uhde GmbH, a subsidiary of the mammoth ThyssenKrupp Group. Uhde’s job is to design and supply equipment for the plant. Contrans Logistic, a German member of the Global Project Logistics Network (GPLN), successfully arranged and managed the transport on Uhde’s behalf.

In all, there were a total five modules of convection banks for this consignment, each with a weight of 110 tons, with a height of 8 to10 meters. Alstom Power manufactured these in the city of Setúbal, which is located on the northern bank of the Sado river estuary approximately 40 km south of Portugal's capital, Lisboa (Lisbon). Alstom Power’s Setúbal operations are in the business of heat recovery and plants for global energy market. They are manufacturing several well known industrial products for equipping power plants around the world. Alstom Power has a private terminal at Porto de Setúbal (Port of Setúbal) called ABB-Alstom Power Terminal. This terminal has one berth with 90m lengths, depth of –5 meters (CD) and is used for general cargo handling. It also has an uncovered storage area of 27 000 m2.

“With the dimensions of the cargo, the loading and transport of the convection banks bore out some great problems,” said Nina Kopplin of Contrans Logistik, “Since the port in Setúbal, where the cargo was loaded, as well as the port of recipient in Porvoo, Finland, are rather small, the length of the vessel was restricted to 110 meters. These circumstances made it necessary to load the convection banks on the lower deck of the ship.”

These convection banks were shipped on a vessel owned by the well-known Dutch carrier, BigLift Shipping, which is a shipping company specialized in the worldwide transportation of heavy lifts and project cargoes. All BigLift vessels are equipped with their own gear which have capacities ranging from 450 to 1100 tons. The journey from Setúbal to the port in Porvoo took approximately eight days travel time.

Dortmund based Contrans Logistik, along with AS-Spedition and Pieper Schwerlast, are members of the CAS Group. Contrans was chosen by Uhde for this work because their service covers all facets of Heavy and special transport within Germany and around the world as well as complete project works, which have been required on this Porvoo project. Shipments thus far have been undertaken by road and sea and virtually all have required special handling or have been transported under special circumstances.

Since 2004 Contrans Logistik GmbH has been part of the Global Projects Logistics Network (GPLN). The members of the network are experts in carrying out international transport by air, sea or land, including for over-sized or especially heavy freight. GPLN is a non-exclusive professional projects logistics group for independent companies specializing in international projects shipping by air, sea and land as well as specialized lifts and handling of oversized, out-of-gauge and heavy lift cargo.
