La Hanseatica: Project Forwarding from the
Andes to the Amazon!
For 52 years La Hanseatica SA has been a leading shipping company in Peru,
representing many well known shipping lines and standing ready as a GPLN
member!
La Hanseatica has a firm commitment is to provide their clients, principles
and agents a professional and customized service. Even after more than 50
years, La Hanseatica's mission continues to be the support of foreign trade
in Peru. They have asserted themselves with a forward looking perspective.
"We have to look towards the future and project ourselves, "said Claus
Krumdiek, La Hanseatica's general manager, "difficult times and obstacles to
overcome will always exist but I am sure that with our tenacity and optimism
we will know how to handle any adverse situations, thereby achieving success
and welfare for Peru in general and for its foreign trade, in particular".
This is the proper attitude for project logistics as well.
Besides project cargo, La Hanseatica is majorly involved in the maritime
agency business, including the project shipper Rickmers-Linie. The Company
covers all Peruvian ports, from Peru's major international sea port gateway,
El Callao, to Peru's port in one of the world's most unique positions,
Iquitos, which is on the upper Amazon, at 2784 km from the mouth of the
river, 1561 km up the river from Manaus (Brazil), the next major Amazon city
with a port. (Iquitos is the farthest port up the river that can be reached
by ocean-going ships all the year).
La Hanseatica has a very unique history and a tight bond with the German
maritime industry. After World War II the German shipping companies had all
but disappeared. Around 1950 that the German merchant navy started its
reorganization so on January 16th, 1953, a group of Peruvian-German
businessmen bet their future the resurgence of the German merchant navy and
founded La Hanseatica, its name itself related to the Hanseatic league of
German trade and shipping cities. It was a gamble that has paid off.
In La Hanseatica's maiden year the renowned German lines Hamburg-Amerika
Linie Nord-Deutscher Lloyd awarded their agency business in Peru, which
continues today under the name of Hapag-Lloyd after their 1970 merger.
Peru is a very unique place to handle project business. It is has an
extremely diverse geography including coastal plains in the extreme west,
which are separated from the eastern lowland tropical jungle of the Amazon
Basin by the world reknown, high and rugged Andes in the center of the
country. In addition to geography, Peru's economy has become increasingly
market oriented, with major privatizations completed since the 1990s in the
mining, electricity, and telecommunications industries. Growth has been
driven by construction, investment, domestic demand, and exports to
different world regions. And as Peru's economy is one of the better-managed
in Latin America over the next few years Peru is likely to attract both
domestic and foreign investment in the mining, petroleum and natural gas,
and power industries, which are major industries requiring project logistics
expertise. When this expertise is required La Haseatica is ready to handle
the call!
