A word from GPLN: Newsletter Issue 105 / July-August 2025
Dear Reader,
China’s Silk Road Maritime Transport initiative has passed a key milestone this July, with 128 dedicated shipping routes now in operation and connecting Chinese ports with more than 50 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and beyond. Launched in December 2018, the initiative has rapidly evolved into a central artery of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), linking strategic ports and supporting trade flows through a growing network which benefits also our GPLN members on these continents.
Our GPLN members in Germany and other EU countries are aware of it: operating heavy transports in Germany comes with significant challenges, as ageing road infrastructure and low water levels on inland waterways makes the movement of heavy and oversize cargo difficult, while long waits for permits for up to 3 months are common. Furthermore, over 7,000 km of motorways and around 8,000 motorway bridges need renovation. This means that transporting large and heavy loads are not only facing a high number of construction sites and the associated traffic jams and bottlenecks, but also high risks when moving them around. However, the future looks brighter because new regulations governing heavy and abnormal transports came into effect in July 2025, and a new fiscal package promises long-overdue funding for roads, rail, ports, and waterways.
As you may know, we will hold our 21st Annual General Meeting from June 12-14, 2026 at the Hilton Hotel in Rotterdam, just ahead of Breakbulk Europe in Rotterdam which is scheduled from June 16-18, 2026, that delegates can combine both events which is not only time but also cost saving. We are expecting again a high attendance of around 200 delegates which will be a great opportunity for networking.
More details and delegate registration (including early bird discount!) for active GPLN members are now available on our dedicated website: https://gpln.net/agm-2026/
Furthermore, GPLN will exhibit again at Breakbulk Middle East from February 18-19, 2026 at WTC in Dubai and has already secured a large stand on a prime location at this event. GPLN members interested in sharing our stand should contact us well in advance due to high demand. Breakbulk ME provides an excellent opportunity for networking with companies form the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
By end of this month, GPLN will exhibit at Breakbulk Americas in Houston/TX which is scheduled from September 30 to October 02, 2025. Following GPLN companies are sharing our GPLN booth and will be pleased to meet you: Fox Brasil/Brazil, Green Worldwide Shipping/USA, Global Shipping Services/USA, Go Gauge Logistics/India and ITM Projects/Mexico.
We are looking forward to meet many GPLN members and visitors at our GPLN Booth #J02 at George R Brown Convention Center in Houston.
Best regards,
Your GPLN Team

PROTRANSER arrange and supervise various project cargo moves

© Protranser International Logistics Co., Ltd. All rights reserved
GPLN member PROTRANSER from China was nominated as the agent to supervise and coordinate the transportation process of a set of key parts of the ITER project in China. The main body was a MCTB CRYOSTAT ASSEMBLY, 313 tons of wight and a dimension of 1.4m*10.5m*6m, which was the largest single component in the project. It was loaded and delivered with a SPMT from the factory to the terminal in Zhangjiagang (3km away) and afterwards it was loaded on a breakbulk vessel to France. During the delivery process, the situation was serious, which greatly increased the uncertainty: 1. tight schedule of manufacturing; 2. typhoon. On one hand, the original plan was to load the main body on a BB vessel by the end of July.2025.
Our team got permission of the shipper and visited the factory in June, but the cargo was not finished yet. On the other hand, during that time, it is usually typhoon season. This time, there were two typhoon, No.7, Francisco and No.8, both affecting the port area and causing a port congestion, so the operation process was stopped because of a sudden rainstorm. Our experienced staffs arrived at the factory and terminal, collected the latest information and shared it with all related parties on time, in order to reduce uncertainty and make sure that the whole process was proceeding smoothly. Finally, the cargo was loaded on a BB vessel and shipped successfully at the beginning of August. For a better world, we are proud to support this great project. Actually, nearly ten years ago, Protranser’s team started to deliver cargo for the ITER project: in 2018: 4 pieces VST for ITER project (Fusion Energy) and in 2021: a 28t on tank to door in France by Breakbulk.
PROTRANSER delivered also over 9k CBM workover rigs from Lianyungang, China to Kuwait. The total volume was 243pcs/1850tons/9300cbm and the heaviest one is 62 tons. Working scope includes port service, customs declaration, loading survey and chartering service of breakbulk vessel. For this case, the challenge we met was that the cargo arrived the port late, successively after the vessel’s berth. In order to catch this vessel, we coordinated it with the port authority and customs and also helped to repair the packaging of the cargo within the limited time.
And the PROTRANSER team delivered 300+ CBM steel pipes from Shanghai to Vietnam by breakbulk vessel. The length of the steel pipes was 12m and 20.58m respectively, which were the extra-long type. Working scope included: port service, customs declaration and chartering service for breakbulk vessel.
In another move PROTRANSER delivered tanks and parts for a liquefied carbon dioxide project in Brazil from Changshu, China to Brazil. The cargo was consisting of carbon dioxide storage tanks, air coolers and parts, with a total volume of 25pcs/360tons/2400 CBM. The heaviest unit was 76.4 tons, with a dimension of 22.29m*4.806m*4.5m (LWH). Working scope included port service and customs declaration service.
Furthermore, PROTRANSER delivered a tank and parts from Taicang, China, to Houston, USA. The cargo was a Cryogenic Ethylene Storage Tank, whose dimension and weight were 18.99m*3.928m*4.144m (LWH) and 46.8 tons. Working

Transmaritim move cargo unloading vehicles

GPLN member transmaritim from Germany had to load the cargo (width: 380 cm) in the port of Hamburg and transport it down to the airport of Stuttgart. Unloading of the two vehicles has been done by mobile crane (we are talking about those vehicles which you see at airports).
Police escort and BF4 was required along the route. Even the cargo wasn’t that heavy (16tons for both), lashing of the vehicle has been a big challenge.
JNC completes an Oil & Gas Equipment Shipment
In July 2025, GPLN member JNC Logistics from China was urgently awarded a contract by CNPC to transport a batch of oil and gas equipment (including steel structures, skid-mounted oil separation units, metering skids, etc.) with a total weight of 1,500 tons (approx. 3,000 CBM) from a Shanghai factory to Umm Qasr Port, Iraq. The cargo consisted of oversized, irregularly shaped pieces, and the client required delivery from factory to vessel loading within just 15 days. Faced with this complex logistics challenge, JNC quickly assembled a dedicated team to design an efficient and reliable “Factory-to-Vessel” breakbulk solution.
Challenges & Solutions:
1. Cargo Complexity:
Largest single piece: skid-mounted oil separation units;
34m (L) x 5.3m (W) x 5.9m (H), Single weighing 160 tons.
Custom lashing required → JNC collaborated with a professional lashing company to implement a “steel frame + flexible securing” hybrid solution, ensuring zero damage during transit.
Tight production schedule → No time to apply for road transport permits. → Solution: Shifted to barge transport, coordinating barge operations directly from the factory’s dock. Cargo was loaded onto barges, transported via the Yangtze River to Longwu Port, Shanghai, and seamlessly transferred to the mother vessel without delays or demurrage costs.
2. Port Coordination:
Longwu Port primarily handles containers, with limited breakbulk handling resources. → JNC pre-negotiated with the port authorities two weeks in advance, securing a dedicated berth to minimize loading time to 72 hours.
Typhoon disruption → A sudden typhoon warning forced emergency relocation of the vessel and cargo to a nearby safe port → JNC immediately coordinated with the shipowner and barge operator to resume operations as soon as the typhoon passed, prioritizing berth reallocation and loading.
3. Operational Highlights:
Urgent timeline → JNC quickly secured the fastest available vessel, KSL ANYANG, with the earliest sailing schedule.
Real-time production tracking → Monitored factory progress to ensure just-in-time delivery.
Specialized handling for oversized cargo → Procured custom lifting beams and slings, which were shipped along with the cargo for safe unloading at the destination.
End-to-end service → Factory → Barge → Mother Vessel, ensuring seamless handover.
Third-party supervision → Hired independent surveyors to document loading procedures and ensure compliance.
Advanced cargo monitoring → Installed vibration-sensitive GPS trackers on sensitive equipment, allowing the client to monitor real-time conditions during transit.
Smooth customs clearance → Despite cargo originating from three different suppliers via multiple transport modes, JNC consolidated documentation and ensured timely customs processing.
Results:
In early August 2025, the cargo was successfully loaded, secured, and dispatched as scheduled.
The client praised JNC’s rapid response, professionalism, and “zero-cargo-damage” execution for super-heavy and oversized shipments.
This shipment not only exemplifies China’s high-end customized equipment exports but also reinforces JNC’s expertise in managing complex breakbulk logistics.

Corwin arrange urgent Transport Mission by Air Freight Charter

End of July 2025, GPLN member Corwin Logistics from China was tasked with transporting an urgent shipment of oversized cargo to Melbourne, Australia. The cargo, measuring over 12 meters in length and weighing 8100 kg, required a highly specialized approach due to its size and urgency.
To minimize damage risks, the cargo was meticulously packaged and reinforced using high-strength composite materials, as recommended by IATA. Protective foam was applied to safeguard against moisture and impact during handling. This careful approach reduces transport accidents by over 30%.
Given the cargo’s size, it required nose-loading. To ensure smooth operations, advanced loading equipment and specialized teams were deployed at PVG, SIN and MEL airports. SQ cargo aircraft, equipped with real-time monitoring systems, provided continuous updates on the cargo’s condition.
Throughout the whole process, from booking the flights (PVG-SIN and SIN-MEL) to loading and securing the cargo, Corwin Logistics maintained close communication with SQ. This coordination was crucial for the successful transport.
By focusing on proper packaging, optimizing the transport process, and ensuring seamless coordination, Corwin Logistics successfully completed the mission. Corwin delivered the goods in early August 2025, and all the goods were in perfect condition, intact and undamaged.
