A word from GPLN: Newsletter Issue 101 / November-December 2024
Dear Reader,
As 2024 comes to an end, global energy priorities have shifted, with a focus on energy security and affordability taking precedence over sustainability. Oil and gas remain central to the global energy mix until at least 2030, as indicated by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Despite ongoing geopolitical instability in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East, oil and gas prices have remained relatively stable. The sector’s high profit margins have encouraged operators to continue investing in projects. Key sectors include oil and gas, renewable energy (solar and wind) and infrastructure. In Abu Dhabi, ADNOC’s major ongoing projects such as the Hail and Ghasha gas development, Ruwais LNG and the expansion of offshore oil fields will significantly increase the demand for project cargo services. Additionally, large projects like NEOM and the Red Sea Development in Saudi Arabia will require extensive heavy lifting and specialized logistics for breakbulk cargo, which our GPLN members in this region are well-equipped to handle. Where elsewhere megaprojects such as the new airport construction and GCC railway network expansions will also significantly increase volumes over the next five years.
After the great success of this year’s AGM in Den Haag, we will hold our 20th General Meeting on our home turf in Bangkok, Thailand, from February 14-16, 2025. GPLN delegates should register now their attendance that they can schedule meetings with fellow GPLN members well in advance: https://gpln.net/agm-2025/

Fleet Line Shipping handle remarkable projects
GPLN UAE member Fleet Line Shipping (FLS) did recently a remarkable project, thus achieving the largest breakbulk haul on a single container ship.
They have loaded 15 prefabricated blast-resistant modules, each measuring 13.8 x 4.25 x 3.7 m of 23 tons from Jebel Ali to Europe onto a Hapag Lloyd vessel. Loading 3255 CBM OOG cargo in a single container ship on an EXW basis requires extensive planning and capabilities. However, it is a job well executed.
FLS picked up the cargo from the shipper’s premises in 15 low-bed trailers and gave the cargo for direct loading. They are also responsible for receiving the cargo onto a barge at the destination for the final door delivery at the consignees’ premises.
Furthermore, FLS also successfully moved three majestic Yachts from Italy to Dubai, measuring up to 43 x 9 x 12 meters and weighing 275 tons each, from Italy to Dubai on a chartered vessel M.V. BBC Leer.
Simona Peter, Business Development Director of FLS, added:
‘’Once in Jebel Ali, Fleet Line Shipping took on the role of ship’s port agency, and our ISO, QHSE& DP World approved crew performed the un-lashing with the highest level of professionalism. The D-rings were carefully cut, and steel stoppers were meticulously gouged and ground to restore the ship’s deck to its original condition, ensuring she was ready for its next voyage. We also arranged permission to dock the yachts, dealt with the Coast Guard, and ensured the owners sailed away these beauties smoothly. These beautiful yachts were expertly unloaded using our spreader beams’ heavy-duty webbing slings, all under the supervision of our in-house loadmasters, to ensure maximum safety and efficiency.
This project highlights our commitment to quality, safety, and attention to detail at every step of the yacht transportation and its process. We are proud to continue delivering excellence in every shipment we handle’’

Protranser deliver Transformers and DG Cargo
GPLN member Protranser’s team from China delivered recently 13 sets of transformers from the factory in Wuhan to UAE & Egypt via Shanghai port. There were 6 sets of transformers to Abu Dhabi in UAE, 3 of them with a main body weight of 105.2 tons, and another 3 with a main body weight of 64.2 tons; plus 7 sets of transformers to Safaga in Egypt, 5 with a main body weight of 54 tons, and another 2 with a main body weight of 116.6 tons. Working scope included picking up cargo at the factory in Wuhan, port service in Shanghai (for the ones to UAE) and customs clearance services.
Furthermore, Protranser delivered also dangerous cargo (Class 9) from Qingdao in Chaina to Iraq via a BBK shipment. The DG cargo was an energy storage cabinet and the weight of it was 48 tons and dimension 7.7*3.02*3.3m. The major challenge we met was the fact that there was no record in history of Qingdao port of handling DG cargo via a BBK shipment, so we need to mobilize auto cranes, coordinate it with the port authority, and deliver empty FR’s and cargo separately to the port. Although the procedure was rather complicated and the operation difficult, such as a maritime declaration and port coordination, we finally made it with great support from our partners. Working scope included port services and booking and export declarations.
Total Movements deliver critical Oil & Gas Equipment
GPLN member Total Movements from India successfully executed the port-to-door transportation of 1500 CBM of critical Oil & Gas equipment from a designated load port in Saudi Arabia to a final delivery site in Singapore.
Our scope included the entire logistics chain, from loading the cargo at the designated load port, shipping the consignment up to the discharge port in Singapore and delivering the same via road until the project site.
Key highlights of this operation:
1. The Hammers were urgently required to be delivered & Total Movements ensured delivery within a timely manner without compromising quality or safety.
2. Direct sailing from the Saudi load port to the Singapore discharge port streamlined the logistics chain, reducing potential delays.
3. Achieved success through close coordination with all involved parties, from port authorities to on-ground transport teams.
This operation underscores Total Movements’ dedication to delivering time-critical, multimodal logistics solutions with precision, efficiency, and reliability, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner in the global logistics industry. Moving Cargo with Passion!
Headseaway move heavy locomotives
GPLN member Headseaway from China successfully arranged in November a door-to-port service for 7 locomotives from Phitsanulok, Thailand, to Humen Port, Guangdong, China.
The unit size and weight of this cargo were 13.055m*2.89m*3.62m, and 56 tons each. Since these 7 locomotives were second-hand, the previous technical data couldn’t be found, and the customer could also not provide suitable lifting tools. The customer required that all goods had to be on board within a week from November 26 onwards.
Headseaway worked closely with the partner by the rapid on-site inspection, technical cooperation and abundant resources and within 2 days we worked out the solution and collected the proper lifting tools.
Next, our nearly seamless shipping process began and on November 29, the receiving trailers and lifting team arrived at the pick-up location and finished loading by 9pm.
On the morning of November 30, all goods arrived at the Laem Chabang warehouse for cleaning and re-wrapping with tarpaulin. The warehouse was about 6 kilometers away from the port.
The performing vessel, MV.HOA Binh 27, arrived in the anchorage area on Dec 1 and was going to call at terminal 3 to load the cargo on November 3. On December 2 all cargo entered the terminal and we completed all export customs procedures in preparation for loading.
At 9:30 am on December 3, the loading process began, and at 5:30 pm, all cargo was safely loaded. Finally on December 15, the vessel arrived at Humen port.
In this particular case, Headseaway relied on its rich experience, quick and decisive decision-making process, and strong support from the agent to overcome various difficulties and successfully completed the above seamless and perfect transportation tasks, creating value for customers and saving time. Once again we won the high recognition of our customer.
Prism Logistics committed to pushing boundaries
GPLN member Prism Logistics from India was awarded a challenging Multimodal Transportation contract for delivering SODC packages to a refinery site in northern India. This project was a true test of our expertise and engineering capabilities, involving sea and road transportation of 2200+ km and innovative infrastructure solutions to overcome logistical hurdles. The package included 3 VGO Reactor modules, which feature a Top Section, a Bottom Section, and a Skirt Section, weighing a mammoth 2000+ MT.
Our team managed seamless coordination across multiple phases, including road transportation to and from the RO-RO jetty. The project involved constructing the RO-RO Jetty at both Hazira and Kandla Port. For accuracy, the in-house marine captains carried out bathymetric surveys, while the marine engineers and naval architects studied tidal currents and channels of jetty services. Apart from that, the logistics systems engineer leveraged load management to ensure the maximum use of resources for gaining stability in the project. Barging from Hazira to Kandla port, and road transportation from Kandla to Panipat site, we achieved success in addressing civil and infrastructure challenges like canal crossings, railway crossings, road modifications, bridge fabrications, toll-booth widenings, and bypass construction.
Our team implemented several groundbreaking solutions, including installing 3 modular steel bridges with 600+ MT of refurbished steel across Narwana, Zazam, and Tharad Canals, enabling seamless cargo movement to the remote refinery site. The underwater welding of Lego pieces by marine divers ensured a strong bridge base. Here, we used 1000+MT capacity Cranes and 10+ Scania & Volvo Pullers to transport steel structures to the canal site. Each bridge, with dimensions exceeding 50+m in length and 10+m in height from the canal bed, boasted a load capacity of 2,000+ MT.
During the journey, the cargo traversed a route with challenges—20+ railway crossings, 50+ bypasses – each spanning up to 2 km. To execute this complex project, we deployed cutting-edge equipment, including SPMTs, 400+ heavy-duty European axles, 15+ prime movers, advanced flattop barges, and 6+ 40-ton bollard pull tugs.
All the reactor modules were delivered and installed successfully through meticulous planning, adherence to safety standards, and close collaboration with all stakeholders.
This project stands as a historic logistical marvel, showcasing Prism Logistics’ ability to overcome unprecedented challenges and set new benchmarks in the industry.
The successful execution required obtaining critical permissions and approvals from various authorities, including the National Highway Development Authority, State Governments, Canal State Authorities, Port Authorities, and other Govt. regulatory bodies. With operations spanning three states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana—we navigated complex administrative processes and ensured compliance at every step.
This achievement highlights Prism Logistics’ unparalleled capability to manage multimodal transportation, heavy cargo handling, and intricate civil engineering work with precision and efficiency, establishing a new standard in logistics excellence. This makes us the best possible option when it comes to handling the largest diameter with the heaviest load across the longest distance for a complex petrochemical sector project.
